Injuries Caused by Antidepressants

Injuries Caused by Antidepressants

| Mar 22, 2018 |  Mass Torts

Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a group of drugs commonly referred to as antidepressants. The number of Americans being prescribed antidepressants has skyrocketed in the past several decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in nine Americans were taking at least one antidepressant between 2011 and 2014. Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for depression, but they are also prescribed for other conditions like sleep disorders, anxiety or neuropathic pain. The most recognizable brands of antidepressants include Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor, Prozac, Symbyax, Paxil, and Zoloft.

SSRIs have been favored by doctors because they don’t carry the same life-threatening heart risks that tricyclic antidepressants do. These SSRIs are considered safer and easier to use. Despite this, SSRIs still carry certain risks. The Food and Drug Administration recognizes that SSRIs increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, suicidal thoughts and behaviors and birth defects. Over the past few decades, hundreds of individuals have reported experiencing unwanted and severe side effects from their antidepressant medication.

Personal Injury Lawyers Representing People Harmed by Dangerous and Defective Medications Nationwide

If you’ve been injured by antidepressant medication, then you may have a legal claim to compensation through a products liability claim. You are likely to receive compensation when you can prove that you were injured, the antidepressant caused your injury and the antidepressant had unreasonably harmful side effects that were insufficiently explained to the patient. Sometimes a group of injured individuals will unite to pursue a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of the drug that caused harm.
