5 Safety Tips for Bicyclists

Bicycle accidents can be catastrophic for a bicyclist, and often result in serious injury or death. It’s imperative for bicyclists to exercise caution and adhere to the following safety tips, which can potentially lower their risk of getting injured in a bicycle accident in Birmingham:

Always Wear a Helmet

A brain injury is one of the most devastating injuries that can result from a bicycle accident, and could cause lifelong consequences or even death. Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to avoid a brain injury from a bicycle accident, which can also result from just a simple fall. Not only is it highly recommended to always wear a helmet, but for kids ages 16 and under, it’s the law in Alabama. Anyone new to bicycling may want to also consider other forms of protective gear, such as knee and elbow pads.

Wear Bright Clothing

You’ll want to ensure others can easily see you, and the best way to do this is by wearing bright colors when you’re bicycling. If you wear earth tones and neutral colors, it can be easier to blend in with your surroundings and a driver might not see you.

Avoid Riding at Night

Nighttime compromises vision for all—drivers and bicyclists alike. Avoid riding your bicycle at nighttime if possible, but if you must ride at night, wear reflective clothing and put reflective lights on your bicycle.

Ride With a Friend

There’s safety in numbers, so the more people you can ride with, the better. A group is much more likely to stand out, and it will be easier for drivers to spot you this way. As a lone rider, it could possibly be easier for a driver to overlook you on the road.

Avoid Dangerous Areas

Many serious bicycle accidents involve collisions with cars. Ideally, you’ll want to avoid riding your bike in areas that can be dangerous. This could include areas with high speed limits, lots of traffic, winding roads with little visibility, and areas that don’t have designated bike lanes and/or sidewalks. The best way to avoid a collision with a vehicle is to avoid roads altogether. Instead, stick to trails and paths that only allow pedestrians and bicyclists.
