8 safety tips for driving in the rain

Inclement weather can pose serious risks to motorists in Alabama and result in catastrophic car accidents. This is particularly true when the weather conditions include wind and rain, which can lead to reduced visibility and skids on the road. While many people might prefer to avoid driving in the rain, the reality is that most people cannot afford to wait until the rain passes.

Here are a few safety tips to protect yourself, your passenger, and other motorists while driving in the rain:

Don’t speed

Cars that travel too fast on wet roads can leave the roadway and hydroplane across the water. It is extremely difficult for a driver to maintain control of their vehicle and to make quick steering and braking decisions while hydroplaning. Additionally, you don’t want to have to brake hard on a wet road because it increases the likelihood of hydroplaning.

Don’t follow other cars too closely

It is generally a good idea to leave a decent amount of distance between your car and the car directly in front of you. When it’s raining and the roadways are wet, you need to give yourself more room, and more time, to hit the brakes and avoid a rear-end collision.

Use your headlights

Alabama requires drivers to use low beam headlights while traveling in rainy conditions. Headlights will enable you to see cars on the road ahead of you and they will allow other motorists to see your vehicle.

Avoid distractions

It is very easy for motorists to divert their attention away from the roadway as they focus on their cell phones or other electronic devices. That’s why distracted driving accidents have become increasingly common, and increasingly deadly, on Alabama roads. Always keep your eyes on the road, especially in rainy conditions.

Maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel

Rain and wind can cause your car to veer to the side of the road. It is imperative that you keep your hands on the wheel when it is raining so that you can steer clear of any sudden dangers.

Don’t use cruise control

You need to be able to reduce your speed very quickly in wet conditions, but this will be difficult if the vehicle is on cruise control.

Remember that wind often accompanies rain

A strong gust of wind can make it difficult for the driver to maintain control of the car. So proceed with extra caution when approaching stretches of road where you are likely to encounter strong winds.

Don’t panic

Even if you skid across a wet roadway, remain calm and do not panic. How you respond to a skid could determine whether you are involved in a serious car accident. Keep your hands on the steering wheel and don’t slam on the brakes while skidding.

Generally speaking, if you are operating a motor vehicle when it is raining outside, you should exercise caution and not take any risks on the road. And if you happen to be involved in a car accident, make sure that you speak with a qualified personal injury lawyer immediately.
