Skilled Personal Injury Lawyers Representing Those Injured By IVC Filters Nationwide

An IVC filter is a tiny medical device that is intended to prevent blood clots in people who cannot take anticoagulant drugs, but are at high risk of developing a blood clot. Among other problems, parts of these small wire devices can fracture and break off. Pieces of metal can then travel throughout the body causing serious and often fatal injuries.

The attorneys of Salter Ferguson, LLC, represent people who were seriously injured by IVC filters and family members of those who died a wrongful death. We are experienced in helping people injured by dangerous and defective medical devices obtain financial compensation for their losses. If you were injured by an IVC filter, please contact us to arrange a free initial consultation and case evaluation.

About IVC Filters

IVC filters are placed in the inferior vena cava, a large vein that carries blood from the lower part of the body back to the heart. The filter is intended to catch blood clots before they reach the lungs, heart, brain or kidneys. Some IVC filters are permanent implants; others can be removed. Risks increase if removable IVCs are left in place after a heightened risk of an embolism has passed.

IVC filters can cause problems in patients in a number of ways. According to the FDA, the most common problems are:

  • Death
  • Device migration
  • Filter embolization (movement of the entire filter or fracture fragments to the heart or lungs)
  • Filter fracture
  • Perforation of blood vessels, organs and tissues
  • Recurrent deep vein thrombosis
  • Recurrent pulmonary embolism
  • Vena cava thrombosis

Less common problems include:

  • Arterial hemorrhage: Requires surgery to avoid death.
  • Filter migration to heart: Can cause heart attack or life-threatening arrhythmia.
  • Sudden death caused by the filter migrating to an active region in the heart.
  • Migration of filter to chest: Requires surgery.

IVC filters are made by several manufacturers, including: Boston Scientific, B Braun Medical, R. Bard, Cook Medical and Johnson & Johnson.
